Pizza – it’s one of the most popular, reliable, and delicious foods in the world.

We’re probably all familiar with its humble origins in Napoli, the birthplace of pizza as we know it today.

Flatbreads had been made in the region for hundreds of years, but the introduction of tomato, cheese, and various other toppings came much later.

Brought over from Peru, tomatoes were originally viewed as poisonous amongst the Europeans. It wasn’t until poorer residents started to top their flatbreads with them, however, that pizza soon became a staple, national product.

Fast forward three-hundred years and we see a huge industry.

In the US, pizza consumption contributes a tasty $38 billion the food industry.

Amid all the horror in the world, pizza is always there to unite us. In fact, over 5 billion are sold every year. And that doesn’t include freshly homemade ones, either. Many of these involve your standard, cheese and tomato (or Margherita).

A frequently cited story goes that the Margherita was made in honour of the Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. Adorned with mozzarella, tomato, and basil, the pizza is said to have represented the national colours of Italy.
